What People Love About The White cliffs

Many describe the section of cliffs between Dover and Folkestone as:

“One of the most spectacular coastal walks in Britain.”

They value:

  • Wide, open grassland paths

  • Big skies and strong coastal light

  • Wind, weather, and changing sea conditions

This creates a strong sense of:

  • Escape

  • Mental clarity

  • Emotional release

All of this will be at risk if the proposed 70 acre truck stop is approved. The King Charles the third coastal pathway and the historic North Downs Way , part of the wider pilgrims way, will be both be visually affected by the intrusive building of such a large scale infrastructure project. The proposed lorry park will be heard and seen from both national walks !

Many walkers say the cliffs feel meaningful, not just scenic.

They connect the walk with:

  • The “gateway to Britain” idea

  • Wartime history and national memory

  • Historic routes like the Via Francigena (which combines the Pilgrims Way /North Downs Way further onward to the pilgrimage route to Italy)

For international visitors especially, finishing the North Downs Way at the white cliffs it is often described as powerful and symbolic, not just scenic.

Visitors love that the walk feels natural rather than manicured.

Common highlights:

  • Chalk grassland wildflowers (especially in late spring and summer)

  • Butterflies and coastal birds

  • Seasonal variation — orchids, poppies, autumn colours

Walkers often comment that the cliffs feel rich but simple, without heavy signage or infrastructure dominating the experience.

Visitors are often surprised by how peaceful the walk feels once away from car parks.

They value:

  • Long quiet stretches

  • Space to walk without crowds

  • A contemplative, almost meditative quality

Across surveys and informal trail feedback, comments often converge on three ideas:

  • Beauty: the views and landscape

  • Emotion: how the place makes them feel

  • Meaning: the sense of arrival, history, and connection

In simple terms, walkers don’t just enjoy the White Cliffs North Downs Way — they remember it.

All of this is at Risk if proposals to build a huge lorry park at Court Wood junction go ahead , just 450 m from the iconic walks

Tourism and Tourists are big news for Dover and visit the Dover district to enjoy the outdoors, the visual scenery, and the famous walks.

Effects on Tourism

Research reveals that 4.5 million people visit the Dover District according to 2023 Tourism Data . This includes 4.1 million day trips , 365,000 overnight visitors , of which 296,000 are UK domestic . The proposed UNESCO geological park according to KCC is likely to develop  extra  visitors to both the French and Kent coastlines. The current plans focus on sustainable tourism growth and diversifying  visitors. If approved in summer 2026 this would be only the third UNESCO geological park in England .Best estimates state anywhere between another 50,000-200,00 visitors are likely along the Dover white cliffs coastline , (primarily with an aim of outdoor activities) .

The Dover District online survey visitor survey 2023 reinforces that visitors  associate the white cliffs country strongly with coastal walking and countryside, and that outdoor recreation is ranked as a primary  association with the area. The National Trust consistently highlights it as a walking destination with iconic walks such as the North Downs Way and  King Charles 3rd coastal path. Indeed , most evidence suggests -

“Around seven in ten visitors to the White Cliffs of Dover visit primarily for walking and outdoor recreation, making it the flagship activity at the site.”

This equates to around 70% of visitors to the white cliffs heritage coast identifying walking and outdoor activities as their primary activity. Best evidence suggests 600,000-700,00 visitors per year to the white cliffs and 350,000 to Samphire Hoe.

White Cliffs Countryside suggest East Cliff and Warren country park  attract an estimated 400,000 visitors per year to it's SSSI site .

This belongs to us, not them !
